Royal BC Museum, Robert Bateman Centre, Maritime Museum of BC and Point Ellice House
Storytelling is the mechanism of history, especially in Indigenous cultures. Join us at the Royal BC Museum for a staff-led tour to listen to oral histories and legends of the First Peoples of British Columbia. Hear stories of Thunderbird, Raven and other supernatural beings as you explore the First Peoples Gallery and the Our Living Languages exhibition. After your one hour tour, spend time on your own exploring the other exciting galleries from the Woolly Mammoth in his rocky, icy world to a tar-scented trip on the HMS Discovery. Then stroll through Old Town’s cobbled streets and enjoy its shops, cinema and railway station. You’ll experience why the Royal BC Museum has been three times voted number one in the Top 10 Museums in Canada by TripAdvisor users.
Next, enjoy a tour of the Robert Bateman Centre and a behind the scenes sneak peak of the upcoming oneTree 2017 exhibit where a salvaged walnut tree is transformed by the hands of 50 artists. After the tour we will head outside to participate in a Nature Sketch where you will learn about the Victoria Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Each participant will receive a Robert Bateman sketch book and pencil and will be guided by an artist and naturalist around the Migratory Bird Sanctuary. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Convention Act, and important step in the history of the Canadian wildlife conservation movement. Despite some challenges, Greater Victoria still has what is arguably the best coastal and marine wildlife in urban Canada, from whales to birds and rare plants. In fact, the Capital Regional District of British Columbia has all the ingredients to become Canada’s first urban U.N. Biosphere Reserve.
Then explore Victoria’s Inner Harbour and discover our maritime heritage and culture. Our tour guides will guide you through Victoria’s 10,000 years of history as you walk to the Maritime Museum of BC. Upon arrival, you will have the opportunity to explore exhibit space and discover the inspirational stories that create B.C.’s amazing maritime culture. Learn more about early explorers on the west coast, shipwrecks and the area known as “The Graveyard of the Pacific”, CPR Steamships and how they influenced Canadian Confederation. Immerse yourself in the art gallery, featuring Tony Grove’s A Boatbuilders Perspective and handle artifacts in the guided Adventures in the Pacific public program.
Lastly, step back in time to the genteel home of one of British Columbia’s premier families, the O’Reillys. Point Ellice House and Historic Gardens offer a unique opportunity to experience many aspects of bygone days. For over 100 years, O’Reilly family members lived in these beautifully appointed rooms and strolled these well-tended grounds and garden. Fully furnished with the family’s original and personal belongings, this Italianate bungalow presents one of the most complete collections of Victoriana anywhere in North America.
